Buying a smartphone: A quick guide
If you don't want to wade through that here's a quick outline of what you need to look for when deciding which is the best phone for you. Deciding which operating system you want to go with is the first step. You have the choice of an iPhone and its easy to use iOS mobile operating system, a massive array of Android phones powered by Google, Microsoft’s Windows Phones and BlackBerry 10, though sadly no current Windows Phone or Blackberry phones makes our top 10 list of best phones.iOS offers the slickest and easiest and the best selection of apps and games while Android has a larger choice of mobiles and more potential for tweaking the phone to your needs. Windows Phone is a great alternative though its lack of support by manufacturers limits your hardware options and app support still trails way behind what Android and iOS have to offer. Meanwhile BlackBerry is only available on the one or two BlackBerry handsets still available – it's a nice enough option but only for a niche market or those desperate for a physical keyboard on their phone.
2014: A year in smartphones
2014 was a stellar year for smartphones with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus finally bringing Apple to the big phone party Android users have been dancing at for years. We've had the debut of Quad-HD screens on the likes of the LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and you can also finally buy smaller Android handsets that offer all the bells and whistles of their bigger flagship siblings for those who like their phones petite.Even if your budget is a bit tight you won't be held back from buying some of the best phones as the likes of the Moto G (leading our list of the best cheap phones) and OnePlus One offer excellent all round performance for half the money of the flagships phones.
Should I upgrade now?
It's a new year, which means there's likely to be new smartphones just around the corner from the likes of HTC, Samsung, Sony, LG and of course Apple. MWC 2015, which is held in March is where we anticipate seeing the Galaxy S6, the HTC One M9 and the not so secret Sony Xperia Z4.If the new flagship phones do make an appearance at MWC, it's likely they will follow similar release dates as last year's models and will be available to buy from March onwards.
But what about Apple? Well, if the new iPhone currently being dubbed the iPhone 6S follows in the footsteps of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus wih a September unveiling, then Apple fanboys and girls are going to have to wait a little while longer before getting your hands on it.
